Run-In With Gates Police - Class of 1966 Senior Banquet
After our banquet was over we were all headed to a party at Joan and Julie Walrath's house on Chili Ave. Not wanting to draw attention to the police by parking on Chili Avenue we decided to park behind Washington Irving School Where we were met by the Gates Police when we returned from the party. They asked us all for our licenses and car registrations which none of us had because we were all driving our parents cars. They then asked each of us the name and address of cars owner and if it checked out they let you leave. I was driving my Grandfather's car that night, who lived nextdoor to us on Lettington Drive,I gave them his info but the car info they received said the car was registered to some guy in the city. They cuffed me,arrested me and placed me in the car to take me downtown to be booked. As we were driving down Chili Ave. I convinced them to stop by my Grandfather's house and look at his registration,Which they did and returned me back to my car. Some of the others who saw me get arrested went back to the party where Mrs.Rota Ride and Mr.Al Cuseo were told and they went to every Police Station in the area trying to find me and bail me out.I was really impressed with the time they both spent in the wee hours of the morning to set me free. I think Rota Ride is retired and still lives in Gates at 1 Floralton Drive,14624 (585-247-2049)I don't know about Al Cuseo.Maybe it would be nice if we invited her to the reunion.I think she was a big advocate for our class.
